I'm sure i'm not the only one to watch a series or two based upon a book and/or series. Currently, I watch Vampire Diaries, but i've watched multiple ones in the past.

What shows based on books do you all watch? Past and present count of course.

Midsomer Murders started out based on books but the show has grown so much since then. My husband and I are really hooked on this one.

Currently, about the only TV-based show I watch is True Blood. However, the tone of the show is so different that, really, the only thing they have in common any more are the names of the characters. I love them both, though!
Oh, I forgot that The Walking Dead is based on a series of graphic novels. I only read the first one, but I think the producers of the show have really captured the tone and feel of the books, if not the exact plot lines.
I still miss Blood Ties, which was based on the Victoria Nelson/Henry Fitzroy books by Tanya Huff, and which aired on Lifetime (before they so foolishly yanked it!)

How about movies based on books or a series? Prime example: Harry Potter. Of course, that would take another crew to do, but would be a lot of fun and help and could create discussion - which was better, the book or the movie and why.

I am really enjoying The Game of Thrones series. The actors are fabulous. It keeps up with the books for the most part. Cannot wait for Season 3.
I also watch The Walking Dead and True Blood. I did watch The Secret Circle but they cancelled it.

SplishReader, I loved both the Harry Potter film and the books - for different reasons. But anytime that the books is published first I try to make sure & read that before ever watching the movies. Of course, now I've watched this series so many times I'm losing some of the details in the book. So, it's time to re-read them again.

Dylver, Kittytnshi - Walking Dead just isn't my thing at all but my husband loves it. I'm just not into anything that gory. We are about to order the next midsomer that's available here in the U.S. I have missed that show since they no longer show them here. At least not on any stations I am aware of. I'm not familiar with the Game of Thrones or Blood Ties.

I agree, Cookie.... I loved both the books & the movies of Harry Potter. The translation from books to movies was well done even though they couldn't include everything, but it is definitely one series I don't mind rereading or rewatching. Also at the top of my list for books to movies is Lord of the Rings, but in that instance I much prefer the movies to the books. The books can be a bit tedious to read because the author's focus was on creating the different languages. I am looking forward to seeing the new The Hobbit movie though.
Books to TV series.... I like Rizzoli & Isles( Tess Gerritson) and Bones(Kathy Reichs) is also based on a book character, Temperance Brennan, however, in that case the series character and the books character are totally different .. much like the differences in True Blood.
Having just finished reading The Dresden Files book series by Jim Butcher I decided to watch the TV series via Netflix. I thought that was pretty good.
I'm also a big fan of PBS TV and love watching Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple all of which are based on books as well as the various Sherlock Holmes interpretations.

Don't get me started on how much they butchered (pun not intended) The Dresden Files as a tv show. They took all the thing Jim Butcher did well and just wrecked it. It made me sad. They should have treated the property with more respect. :/

lol... yes, general consensus among my son & his friends is that they did indeed "butcher" The Dresden Files. I did enjoy the series tho, but I am glad I read the books first. Have you ever read any Preston & Childs books? I love the Agent Pendergast character. There's only been one movie made based on that series though... Relic. I think Clive Cussler's books make pretty decent movies... I enjoyed Sahara and Raise the Titantic.
